Welcome! Entertaining Informational Seminars

A Teacher Walks into the Bar...

Before "passing the Bar" and becoming a lawyer, I worked both in theatre and as a teacher (and even as a theatre teacher.. but that's another story). Now, in addition to providing traditional legal services, I offer group seminars on a variety of topics. The classes are fun, light, and entertaining presentations on a specific topic, usually ranging between 30 and 50 minutes in length.

Topics

Classes are available on a variety of topics, including:

Business and Finance:

  • Getting Off The Ground
    • The basics of starting your own business. This class touches on choosing the correct business form, required licenses and registrations, considerations in choosing partners, writing a business plan, basic marketing, and an overview of tax issues.
  • I'm in Debt and I Can't Get Out!
    • Solutions for regaining control of your financial life. This is a general money-management and budgeting seminar that is designed to help attendees find solutions to their debt woes (or avoid them in the first place). Subjects discussed include the causes of debt, writing (and following) a budget, basics of debt negotiation, and a cursory introduction to bankruptcy.
  • Bankruptcy Basics
    • A straightforward introduction to Bankruptcy in all its forms. This class describes the four most common types of bankruptcy (Chapters 7, 11, 12, and 13) and discusses the benefits and limitations of each. Chapters 7 and 13 are discussed in greater detail due to their relative popularity.
Landlord - Tenant Issues
  • My Rent, My Rights:
    • An explanation of your rights are as a rental tenant in California. An ideal class for student organizations, this class introduces tenants to their rights (and responsibilities) under California law. Landlord obligations, limits on landlord visits, and caps on allowed deposits are all covered, as are the remedies available to tenants.
  • My Place, My Rights:
    • Clarifying you rights are as a California landlord. This class is a companion to the tenant rights class that focuses on the other side of the story. Landlord and Tenant obligations are discussed, along with the remedies available to tenants and tips for handling tenant issues.

Historical Preservation

  • This Old Historical Resource
    • An introduction to the wonderful world of historic preservation. The National and California registers are explained, as is a brief history of the historic preservation movement. A discussion of the role of Section 106 and the effects of Register listing is included, as is an introduction to the nomination process.

Helping Your Club

The seminars are designed to be hosted by a local community association, rotary club, student organization, church, or similar group. They are a fun way to provide useful information to your group's members, whether as a stand-alone event, a a luncheon presentation, or part of a fundraiser.. Speaking fees are reasonable, and may be waived for qualified non-profit organizations.
