We have received numerous calls from people who have been contacted by somebody who claims to work for our office. The caller claims that they are calling about a debt or judgment, often around $300-600, but sometimes as high as several thousand dollars, and threatens all sorts of consequences, including jail, if the debt is not paid.
According to the reports we have received, the person tells the victim to call them back at (209) 812-2277, although other numbers are occasionally used. Our research indicates that these numbers are most likely "virtual" numbers obtained online, and so can be easily changed.
These callers DO NOT represent or work for us. We DO NOT engage in aggressive collection practices and would never threaten someone.
If you receive one of these calls, gather as much information as you feel comfortable and contact the FBI, Federal Trade Commission, and/or your local law enforcement agency. It appears that these calls are part of a scam orchestrated by someone outside of the U.S. who is seeking to get identity and bank information from victims in the U.S.
If you ever have any doubt that a call claiming to be from our office is really us, hang up and call us directly at one of the numbers listed in the top right corner of this page.
